In honor of Doris's birthday, Christie Sietos has written a treatise on Doris Day's impact on animal welfare. The pdf is provided below. It will also remain as a permanent part of our Doris Day web pages at this link.
We were hoping to get an honest to goodness interview with Doris herself. We could not work it out, but here is the next best thing. We call it FANTASY INTERVIEW, #1 (Check archived Birthday Pages for messages from Doris)
IN THE EARLY 50'S, DORIS RECORDED THE FOLLOWING SONG. EVEN THEN, WE ARE CERTAIN SHE KNEW THAT THERE WERE MILLIONS OF FANS OUT THERE. THEY LOVED HER THEN; THEY LOVE HER NOW. THIS SONG TELLS IT LIKE IT IS.....
THE EVOLUTION OF A "SIGNATURE SONG"
A signature song is one that is readily identified with one person more or less throughout their career, and any time the song is played, most people realize that said song really "belonged" to that person. So, if we ask what is Doris Day's signature song most people would probably say "Que Sera, Sera." And they would only be partially correct. (click on song titles below to hear the songs) Doris was lucky enough to have more than one signature song in her career, and today, those songs are still identified with her. The first of these was "Sentimental Journey" from the days when she was vocalist with Les Brown and his Band of Renown (1945).
Three years later, she got a second signature song from her first movie, ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS, and it was her first song to be nominated for an Academy Award, Of course, that would be "It's Magic".
Although there were many hit tunes after that identified with her. The next song clearly identified with Doris and her career came in 1953 with the film, CALAMITY JANE. The song was "Secret Love" , which won both an Oscar and a Grammy Award. In 1954, it was a song that was covered by many people, but the song still "belongs" to Doris..."If I Give My Heart To You".
Then came 1956 and the movie, THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH. The song was called "Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)", and it, too, won an Academy Award. But that wasn't all. Two years later, it was a hit single called "Everybody Loves A Lover", and that, too, is one of her signature songs. BUT that is not the WHOLE story. Think of the following songs and try NOT to think of Doris Day: "When I Fall in Love", "The Deadwood Stage", "Tea For Two", "Pillow Talk","Move Over, Darling", "Bewitched", "Love Me or Leave Me". And there were still others. Let's take one example and see how the signature tune evolves.
In 1956, Doris released a top selling album called "DAY BY DAY", named after the standard tune that came out in 1945, written by Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sammy Cahn. The first popular recording of the song was by Jo Stafford. In 1946, two versions of the tune were on the Hit Parade. One was by Frank Sinatra, the other was by Les Brown and His Band with Doris singing the vocal. 10 years later, when Doris released her popular album, she revitalized the song once again. It has been sung by hundreds of popular singers through the years, including the Four Freshmen and Sarah Vaughan. Even Sinatra recorded it again,in an uptempo mode, for his album called "Songs for Swinging Lovers" in 1961. But most music critics align the song with Doris, and thus, it, too, has become one of her signature tunes.
How lucky we music lovers can have so many songs associated with the Queen of Song!

DORIS DAY AND MOTOWN??? Rarely, ifwas a new show called MOTOWN, THE MUSICAL. It is the story of Berry Gordy and Motown Records. What is the "Doris Day Connection"? See the article below, written by Roger Friedman:
Motown's First Act Might Have Been ... Doris Day! Roger Friedman
One important thing I gleaned from an early preview performance last night on Broadway of “Motown: The Musical’: Doris Day could have been its first act, way before The Supremes or Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. A young Berry Gordy was writing songs and pitching them to Jackie Wilson — and he actually had some hits like “Reet Petite.” But Gordy really wanted to sell a song to Doris Day. She’s not what you think of when you think Motown. But Gordy wrote a song for her and sent it, naively, to “Doris Day– Hollywood” in what they used to call ‘the mail.’ He didn’t get an answer.
I can’t tell you too much about “Motown” yet because the creators are still tinkering with it. I will tell every seat is sold, and the joint is jumping. They’ve packed at least 60 songs into the show including two written by Gordy for Jackie Wilson, and one or two new songs. But let’s say 57 of them are Motown classics, heard in snippets to full length versions. This is not an easy show to pull off because “Motown” had so many acts, and the acts were groups as well as solos, and they each have separate stories. You do pretty much see or hear everyone who was ever involved with the company, which is amazing.
The show is extremely well cast, from the young lady who plays Diana Ross down to the little boy we saw last night who re-creates little Michael Jackson. The show now — it may change– even has a quick tribute to Rick James. Also, I found it interesting that Gordy, who wrote the book for the show based on his autobiography, can be unsparing about his own failures even while celebrating his many successes.
“Motown” is going to be a monster hit — actually it is already. I can’t wait to see it when it’s all done on April 14th. And yes, there is a “Doris Day” singer who croons that early Gordy tune. Clever.
PS Quite a gang for late theater supper last night at Bar Centrale: Chris Rock and Zack Braff, plus Richard Kind, Bobby Cannavale, and Joey Slotnick after a performance of “The Big Knife.” And everyone’s talking about how good almost all the new shows are. A very solid Broadway season.
